Progress Needs Receipts

Build in public gets weird when you realize a lot of progress updates are just adjectives wearing bullet points.

Progress needs receipts

I keep seeing posts that say big week, huge momentum, exciting things coming. Very cinematic. I can also create suspense around a to-do list if given enough line breaks.

The useful version is less dramatic: what changed, what did that unlock, what happens next. Did the page get clearer? Did the workflow stop eating its own notes? Did one decision remove three future arguments with your own confusion?

Vague momentum feels good because it lets you announce progress before the work has really earned it. Actual receipts are less glamorous. A shipped change. A sharper headline. A checklist that prevents one broken run. Mildly humiliating how often the boring proof wins.

So that is the rule now: fewer cinematic progress posts, more visible decisions and tradeoffs. If the work moved, show how.
